Q. How old are you?
A. I'm 30.
Q. In what city do you work?
A. I work in Stouffville, Ontario, in Canada.
Q. What type of company do you work for?
A. It's not really a company. I work for the School Board which is run by the Parent Board.
Q. What is your job title?
A. I am the head of athletics and computer education.
Q. At what times does your work day begin and end?
A. I start work at 8:00 am and finish at 5:00 pm on most days. I usually work another hour at home.
Q. How many days per week do you work?
A. I usually work 5 days per week. At certain times during the year I work 6 days per week.
Q. What is your office like?
A. I work in a classroom.
Q. What kind of clothes do you wear to work?
A. In the classroom, I wear dress pants and a dress shirt. When teaching phys ed, I wear wind pants and a golf shirt.
Q. Who do you work with?
A. I work mostly by myself and, of course, with students.
Q. Tell us about your education and how it has prepared you for this job.
A. I have 5 years of university. I have also taken additional summer courses to learn new skills, to keep current.
Q. What should a kid do NOW to prepare for your kind of job in the future?
A. It is important for a person who wants to be a teacher to get experience that relates to teaching. Coaching and tutoring are good examples. You will need to do well in high school so that you can get into the most appropriate university courses.
Q. Do you have any other advice for kids who are thinking about having your type of career?
A. No, that's about it.
Q. What skills or subjects are important to your job?
A. Teaching requires a proficiency in many areas but does not require excellence in any one particular area. Obviously, a phys ed teacher needs some physical ability. Teaching definitely requires good communication skills, computer skills and organization.
Q. What are the top ten things that you normally do at work each day?
A.
1. Preparing written plans for lessons.
2. Preparing teaching aids such as audio-visual aids and sports equipment.
3. Teaching students the lessons.
4. Talking with students outside of class.
5. Talking with parents.
6. Coaching after-school sports.
7. Writing tests and exams.
8. Grading lessons, tests and exams.
9. Writing report cards!
10. Supervising students in the school yard.
