  FAST FACTS: The capital of Alabama, Montgomery, was the founding site of the Confederate States of America in 1861, and later the site of the Montgomery bus boycotts in the 1950s and 1960s. Additionally, Montgomery served as home to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. In 1881, Booker T. Washington in 1881 founded the Tuskegee Institute.
