Trade

Ghana had several products of industry, including gold, salt, slaves, honey, jewelry, tools, metal and leather goods, rare birds, livestock, horses, and special cloth called Chiguyiya.  Gold and salt were mined and were the most sought after items.  The mines were scattered to the south.  In the city of Koumbi the market people traded and sold cattle, honey, dates, cloth, ivory, and ebony.  In other shops at the market local farmers sold their produce and craftspeople sold their wares.
Most traders were Muslim.

Caravans

The arrival of the Trans-Saharan caravans was a special event.  It was a caravan of camels and traders that crossed the Sahara to trade in west and east Africa. Traders brought rare and wonderful treasures from far off lands like cloths and ever important salt.  These treasures came from Egypt, Arabia, Palestine, and even as far as central Asia.  Camels that were in the trade caravans were very hard to handle, so professionals were hired.  The Great Three depended on trading to survive and grow.

Gold Nuggets

Technology

The west Africans learned iron making technology from the north Africans.  That allowed them to make iron head spears instead of wood and stone head spears.  This was better for hunting.

Crops

Ghana's major crops were millet, sorghum, cotton, ground nuts, rice, cow peas, okra, pumpkins, watermelons, kola nuts, sesame seeds, and shea nuts which were butternuts they used for a spread.
