Daily Life

We all have at least five things that go on day to day.  The ancient people from the Indus River Valley civilization did too.  They had things to do and places to go just as we do today.

Pattern of the Day

Everyone has some kind of pattern that goes on in their daily life.  One daily pattern might be going to a job.  Another could be understanding the layout of the city, so you could know where to go day to day.  Without understanding the pattern, your life would be very hard, because you would be asking for directions all the time.  Knowing how basic services are provided in your area is also important.  For instance, you need to know where and when to get food.  All of these were also important for ancient cultures to know.  In ancient India there were huge granaries where people could get their grain every day.  Their city had a grid pattern that many of our cities have.  This helped people get around in an organized fashion.  People in ancient India also knew what was expected of them for work each day. Farmers knew a lot about how to grow grain, metal workers knew what people needed.  If people didn't do the same things each day, life would get very confusing.

Plumbing Systems

The Ancient Indian people had a very advanced plumbing system.  They had brick pipes and sewers, and might have had the first plumbing system.  Each house had a bathroom floor with a brick drain pipe.  The out flow from the houses went into an ingenious municipal sewage system.  There were also pipes on the roofs of the houses to carry the rain water down to the sewage system where the toilet system went as well.  Every now and then a man hole would be dug in the street so the plumbing system could be checked and cleaned.  The system was luxurious for the Indus people.

The giant graneries in which the ancient Indus people stored their grain was controlled by the Priests.(Look at Social levals for priests.) The farmers would bring the grain to these huge buildings from there the priests would hire people to grind the grain to flour.  Then the preists would hire the merchants to take the grain to the market to be sold.  These people that the priests would hire would get paid in grain.  This system would ensure that everyone in the city would get their grain.
