There were many diffrent types of social levels in Canaan, although the people tried to live equally. At certain points in history they were very unequal- they were all slaves (eg. Egypt) Later, when they were not in bondage, the Canaanites had kings.
For a long time, the Canaanites were all slaves to the Egyptians. The Egyptians treated the Canaanites like dirt. The Egyptians separated husbands and wives, killed some of the children, and did not feed the Canaanites well.
After 400 years stuck under the Egyptions, the Canaanites settled down and started to be ruled by Canaanite kings. The first king was Saul. Saul had three sons, all of which would have made good leaders. The whole family was treated with great respect, as were all of Saul's good friends. This was how it was for kings to come, as well.
The most important thing to the people of Canaan was their religion. To them, the king was a peddler compared to God.
