Government

The Israelites were originally consisted of many tribes, each with its own leader or king.  It was not until the Philistines first attacked that they decided to have a more organized form of government. There were three kings; Saul, David,  and Solomon.

Saul

Saul was the first king of Israel. He was big, strong and handsome.  He was from the centrally located tribe of Benjamin, so he was chosen easily.  When he won a war with the Philistines, his position as king was strengthened.  His death occurred during a war against the Philistines.  His three sons had been killed, and he was wounded, so he committed suicide by falling upon his own sword.

David

When Saul died, he had no sons to give the kingdom to. So the Canaanites picked the most famous person in Canaan, David. He was famous because he slayed Goliath.  David extended the kingdom when he took over the Philistines.  He brought the people back to believing one God and only one God.

Solomon

Solomon was David's son.  He was famous for building the first temple in Jerusalem.  Solomon expanded the kingdom to make iron and copper mines. That helped the Israelites because trading routes across seas.  The Canaanites were the first to use iron tools.  He developed ships to make trading routes overseas, with that came high taxes.
