One of the most impressive displays of nature is the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field. When the Sun sends solar wind into the vicinity of Earth, our magnetic field traps it and as a result, the solar wind collides with the air molecules at the planet's magnetic poles. The air molecules begin to glow and large sheets of auroras are formed. Auroras are usually seen in the polar areas of the world, which is how the names Northern and Southern lights came to be.
