Introduction to Uranus
Uranus is one of the gas giants of the solar system and is the seventh planet from the Sun. It is the third largest planet with an equatorial diameter of 51,800 kilometers (32,190 miles) and is larger in diameter but smaller in mass than Neptune. It orbits the Sun every 84.01 Earth years with an orbit of 2,870,990,000 kilometers (19.218 AU) and has an orbital period of 17 hours 14 minutes. Uranus has fifteen known moons, with a likely possibility of several undiscovered smaller ones in existence.
Uranus is named after the Greek deity of the Heavens who was he son and mate of Gaia, the father of Cronus with Cyclopes and Titans. The planet has been visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 on January 24, 1986.
