THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

On January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born. King was a strong civil rights leader who peacefully protested for the rights of African-Americans. He delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963 at a march on Washington. In 1964 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.



On January 16, 1919, prohibition took effect. This meant that it was illegal to purchase or drink alcoholic beverages or liquor. Despite a huge government effort and enforcement, they were unable to prevent people from drinking. In 1933 the 21st Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which again allowed alcoholic beverages to be consumed.



On January 17, 1706, Benjamin Franklin was born. An accomplished man with a solid standing in American history, Franklin was a statesman, the oldest signer of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, a printer, an author, a publisher, and an inventor. He also established the University of Pennsylvania.
