SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 1: Three Little Pigs
What is green, rolls in the mud, and oinks? Pigs! Years ago, scientists created green glowing mice. Now they have moved on to larger animals, and three little piglets can glow in the dark.
These new pigs are entirely green. Moreover, they are transgenic because they have two different species of animals in their genes. The stem cell research combined the pig and jellyfish genes to create pigs that have green hearts, lungs, stomachs, teeth, eyes and slightly green skin. The result of adding jellyfish DNA to pigs is green glow in the dark piglets. Born three months ago, these pigs are completely normal except for their coloration.
Why make pigs green? Scientists actually use the coloration of the pigs' cells to study human disease. Because the pig cells are colorful, it is easier to track them and study them. Disease research can move faster because the scientists can identify the pigs' cells; consequently, cures can be found faster.
