WEEKLY NEWS 2: Mount Augustin Volcano Erupts
Early Wednesday morning, residents of Clam Gulch on the Kenai Peninsula confirmed the eruption of Mount Augustin Volcano and reported seeing ash, according to geologist Jennifer Adleman of the Alaska Volcano Observatory, as reported by The Seattle Times. The new eruption sent an ash plume (estimated 30,000 feet) into the Alaska sky.
The volcano last erupted in 1986.
The observatory has a web cam on the mount to record activities in the volcano. The warning increased from yellow to orange and then red to warn the residents of the area that the volcano could erupt at any minute.
"The observatory after sunrise at around 10:00AM planned to make observation flights to get more information about the types of gases emitted from the volcano," Adleman told The Seattle Times.
Scientists observe the earth's movements and therefore can locate some of the activities in a volcano. However, they cannot be certain of the eruption time until after the fact. It's impossible to stop a volcano or to calm it down. Scientists still have a lot to learn in order to be specific about an eruption before it occurs.
