U.S. GOVERNMENT: Senator Lieberman Will Run for President
On January 13th, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman announced that he would run for the Democratic nomination for President. Senator Lieberman is a Democratic United States senator from Connecticut. He made this announcement last Monday in his old high school auditorium; he was also there to talk to a history class about the American government.
Before he runs for president, however, he will need to win the nomination from the Democratic Party. This means that the Democrats will only put forward one candidate to run in the election, so Lieberman will need to beat other Democrats for the position before he is able to run for president.
Senator Lieberman began his career in politics in 1972. In 1972 he was elected as a member of the Connecticut state Senate. He served at a state senator for 10 years before he won the election for Connecticut state Attorney General in 1982. In 1988 he was elected to be a United States senator from Connecticut, where he has been ever since. However, Senator Lieberman has been in the news a lot in the past few years, because in the 2000 Presidential Election, he ran for Vice President with Al Gore.
Other Democrats who plan to try for the Democratic nomination for President are Senator John F. Kerry from Massachusetts, Senator John Edwards from North Carolina, Senator Richard A. Gephardt from Missouri, and Howard Dean from Vermont.
