SPORTS ZONE 1: PGA Season Begins
The Professional Golf Association season began last week in Kapalua, Hawaii. Ernie Els started the season off with a bang!
Els, also known as The Big Easy, shattered the PGA Tour's scoring record in relation to par as he closed his final round at the Mercedes Championship with a score of 6-under 67. This allowed him to finish the tournament at 31-under which earned him to win the championship by eight strokes. Previously the tour's scoring record was set by two other golfers. John Huston scored a 28-under at the 1998 Hawaiian Open in 1998 and in 2001 Mark Calcavecchia earned this score at the Phoenix Open.
Tiger Woods did not participate in the Mercedes Championship because he was home recovering from knee surgery. This surgery will keep Woods off the PGA Tour for at least the first five weeks of the season.
Ernie Els has now won eight times worldwide over the past 13 months. Including in these wins are three major victories.
Els earned $1 million for this victory which was his 11th career victory on the PGA Tour. He is golfing this week in the $5 million Sony Open.
