AROUND THE WORLD 2: Technology Comes to Sudan
There’s a new sound in Rumbek, Sudan. The war-torn nation is in the process of rebuilding after 21 years of civil war. With the peace agreement that was signed in January, civilians can now enjoy the benefits of the 21st century. The new sound the Sudanese are hearing is the ring of a cell phone.
Satellite dishes, generators, and computers were also shipped to the nation, which will aid in connecting it to the rest of the world. Internet cafes are also springing up in this country, allowing the Sudanese to check email and surf the web.
During the war, nearly 3 million people left the African country. Now that the war is over, some folks are returning home. For the average Sudanese citizen, who earns only $1.00 a day, the cell phones are a luxury. But with the economy gaining strength, that could soon change.
Now that the war has ended, there will be new opportunities for the people of Sudan. Instead of soldiers, they can now become other professions, such as carpenters, mechanics, teachers and doctors.
