AROUND THE WORLD 4: Einstein Honored in Germany

Albert Einstein, an amazing physicist, will be honored all year in Germany. This year is the 100th anniversary of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and the World Year of Physics.

Einstein was named Person of the 20th Century by Time magazine. Why is he such a celebrated physicist? Einstein solved the puzzle of how time and space work with the Theory of Relativity. He helped us understand that atoms exist and that light is made of particles. Before Einstein, we thought time and space never changed, but now we know that gravity and motion can alter time. Einstein was like a pair of glasses that showed us how the world works from the smallest atom to the limitless bounds of space. Because of his significant discoveries, he won the Nobel Prize. He was only 26 when he changed the world with his theories.

Because Einstein was born in Germany, many talks, tours, and exhibits in that country will honor him throughout this year. The German Chancellor hopes to encourage other bright thinkers to consider the world’s scientific as well as political issues. Einstein dramatically affected the world because he didn’t limit himself to physics; he shared his thoughts in many disciplines. Einstein Year moves to honor a legendary scientist and inspire other scientists to solve today’s puzzles.
