MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 1: Computer Picture Books

Visibooks, LLC has created the first computer how-to books based on pictures, not words.

The new books, called Visibooks, employ illustrations rather than text to walk people through common tasks. They contain only one-tenth as much text as previous computer books. While a typical "dummies"-type book may contain over 50,000 words, Visibooks contain less than 5,000.

Originally developed as part of a U.S. Department of Education study to help learning-disabled students, the books are becoming popular with mainstream users. Many appreciate the books' simplicity: "Some of us understand more quickly what we see than what we read," said one Visibooks customer.

The 22 new books cover Windows, Microsoft Office, and Web development topics. They are available in both Personal and Textbook editions at www.visibooks.com.

Personal Edition Visibooks can be downloaded in PDF format for $1.95 each. Textbook Editions, for classroom and help-desk use, are $4.95 to download and $24.95 spiral-bound. They can also be licensed like software for use on multiple workstations.
