MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 1: Kelly Clarkson Plans First Solo Tour
After two years of touring with fellow “American Idol” contestants, Kelly Clarkson is ready to break away and headline her own show. On Tuesday, February 22, the first “American Idol” winner announced she will go it solo for 35 concert dates in 34 cities throughout the United States and Canada.
“The Breakaway Tour” begins March 30 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and ends Mays 29 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Other stops include Cleveland, Chicago, Boston, Toronto, Tampa and Los Angeles. “Nothing makes me happier than being out on the road,” said Clarkson in a statement. “I can’t wait to see the fans and perform my new material.”
The 22-year-old singer will promote songs from “Breakaway,” her sophomore CD. It was released on November 30, 2004, and has gone platinum by selling more than 1.4 million copies. Two songs from the disc, the title track and “Since U Been Gone,” have already emerged as smash hits on Mainstream Top 40 radio.
Clarkson will perform in mostly theater-size venues, including the outstanding DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., and the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. “Playing these small venues will be a great opportunity for me to connect with my die hard fans in an intimate setting,” Clarkson said. “I’m really excited and I know it’s going to be awesome.”
Clarkson has recently appeared on “Good Morning America,” “TRL” and the SuperBowl pre-game show. In February, she was the featured musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” where she had the chance to act in comedy skits with “SNL” cast members. Clarkson has also signed on to be the first celebrity ambassador for the March of Dimes’ Team Youth program, which raises awareness about premature birth and birth defects.
