WEEKLY NEWS 1: U.S. Ready for Woman President in 2008

A poll this week found that America is ready for a woman to become president. In the poll, conducted by the Heart Newspapers/ Sienna College, 81 percent of U.S. voters said that they would vote for a female candidate for president. However, only 62 percent of voters said that they were ready to elect the first female president in the next election.

Sixty percent of voters believe that the Democratic Party will nominate a female presidential candidate in 2008, while only 18 percent think the Republican Party will have a woman run in the next presidential election.

U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, former First Lady, has 53 percent support from voters if she decides to run for president. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had 42 percent support, with Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer of California filling in the third and fourth spots.

The poll also found that voters thought that a female president would be better than a man on foreign policy and national issues. Men and women did not differ on their views of a female president, with 64 percent of men and 60 percent of women ready to elect a woman as president in 2008.

Victoria Claflin Woodhull was the first woman to run for president in 1872.
