SPORTS ZONE 2: Veterans Announce No Inductions

The Veteran Committee failed to elect anyone to the Baseball Hall of Fame on February 26, 2003. In order to get elected, the player needed to have at least 75% of the votes and at least 61 votes. Eddie Murray and Gary Carter were elected to the Hall of Fame during the general elections a few months back. Eddie Murray was named 423 ballots of 496 ballots sent out and Gary Carter was named 387 ballots of 496 ballots sent out. 372 ballots are equal to 75% of the votes requirement. Eddie Murray had 85.3% and Gary Carter had 78%.

In the veteran's election, Gil Hodges, Doug Harvey, and Tony Oliva came closest. Notably, Roger Maris received only 18 votes, in what could be his last ballot appearance. Gil Hodges, a foerm Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman and New York Mets manager, came the closest with 50 votes, or 61.7%. Tony Oliva is the Minnesota Twins' star hitter and Doug Harvey is an NL umpire. Doug Harvey came second with 48 votes and 60.8%, and Tony Oliva had 48 votes and 59.3%. Those three came closest to getting into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
