U.S. GOVERNMENT 2: FCC to Look Into Gov’t Videos

A U.S. senator wants the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to look into whether television stations broke the law when they aired stories produced by the U.S. government. Sen. Daniel Inouye, of Hawaii, wrote in a letter to the FCC that these video news releases should have mentioned that they were made by the government.

Inouye wrote in the letter that the FCC should make sure that these stories do not mislead viewers. He also wants the FCC to investigate if stations accepted money or other favors from the government because they used the stories.

During President George W. Bush’s press conference on Wednesday, he said that the government would continue to make these videos because they are legal. The president said that the videos are not against the law as long as they are made with the facts. He also said it was the television station’s decision to say that the videos were produced by the government.

FCC spokesman David Fiske said in an article that they will “take the letter very seriously and will look into it.” The FCC, which monitors television, cable, telephones and radio, must look into a complaint before they do an investigation.

The FCC is currently investigating the Education Department for paying well-known television personalities to support the president’s No Child Left Behind Act, a law that makes sure all schools are on the same level of education.
