On April 22, 1970, Americans celebrated the first Earth Day. About twenty
million Americans joined in to help the country learn about the environment.
People attended rallies, listened to speeches, and walked in marches to
celebrate the day.
On April 23, 1564, William Shakespeare was born in Stratford, England.
Shakespeare wrote more than 26 plays and 150 poems. Some of his most famous
plays include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and MacBeth.
On April 24, 1898, the Spanish-American War began when the Spanish declared
war on the United States. The U.S. had asked the Spanish to leave Cuba, and
they had refused. The Treaty of Paris was signed on December 10, 1898, and
it officially ended the war.
