PICTURE OF THE WEEK: New Crash Test Dummies

To improve their smarts about auto safety improvements, engineers are turning to dummies. Over the years, crash test dummies have become part of the hi-tech safety test equipment that helps safety engineers make vehicles safer.

Early crash test dummies were nothing more than sandbags shaped to resemble humans. But the newest crash test dummy costs about $200,000 each and resembles a real person as closely as possible. The dummies are upholstered with soft vinyl to simulate skin and their steel framework behaves like a human body during simulated crashes.

State of the art electronics provide computer information that help engineers examine the dummy’s injuries. From this information they learn how to improve safety equipment for future cars so injuries can be prevented. These safety devices are just one of the tools the automotive industry uses to keep vehicles as safe as possible.
