U.S. GOVERNMENT 2: President Sued By Teachers

\ President George W. Bush was sued this week by teachers and school districts over the No Child Left Behind act. This law sets standards for all public schools to improve education. The lawsuit, the first challenge to Bush’s law, was filed in the U.S. District Court for eastern Michigan. The other states involved in the lawsuit are Vermont and Texas.

The National Education Association, a teacher’s union of about 3 million members, is a major supporter of this lawsuit. Ten NEA chapters in Vermont, Michigan, Texas, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Utah are apart of the case.

The lawsuit is based on the law that says that the government cannot force states or school districts to spend money on areas of education not covered by the government. It also accuses the government of cheating schools out of about $27 billion.

The people who filed the suit, the plaintiffs, argue that billions of dollars have been wasted to meet the law’s strict standards. They want a judge to order that schools shouldn’t have to spend money for the law’s expenses.

Newly appointed Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, is listed as a defendant in the suit. She is accused of breaking the law and the spending section of the U.S. Constitution.
