AROUND THE WORLD 2: Egyptian Bombings

In the red sea resort town, Dahab, Egypt, three bombs exploded last Monday, killing at least 18 people and injuring many more. Egyptian officials told reporters that Islamic extremists were responsible for the attack.

Islamic extremists commit terrorist acts and say it is in the name of the Islam religion. But Islam is actually a very peaceful religion, and most people who practice it don’t agree with the extremists.

The Islamic extremists blamed for the bombing come from a group of Bedouin people who complain that the government is not listening to their needs. Monday’s attack was the third attack on the Sinai Peninsula in just 18 months.

Then, on Wednesday, in northern Sinai, there were two more attacks by bombers targeting both Egyptian police and a peacekeeping group made up of people from several countries and led by the United States. The two bombers were unsuccessful and killed only themselves in the attacks.

People lit candles in Dahab throughout the week to remember the victims of the bombings. Large groups also marched near the bombing site carrying signs and chanting for peace. Some signs read “Stop Terrorism.”
