SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 1: Snake Bot

When a disaster occurs, like an earthquake or hurricane, rescuers try to find people who may be trapped in debris or fallen buildings. Sometimes it is difficult to locate people because of all the debris. Piles of rock, steel or other material may even prevent rescue dogs from locating people. But now, science has the answer: snake bots.

Snake bots are being tested at many universities around the country. They are usually about as long as your arm and very lightweight. Unlike other robots, snake bots have special joints that allow them to move easily in multiple directions.

According to the Associated Press, one professor has created a snake bot that can climb poles. Using aluminum and plastic, Professor Howie Choset has created snake bots that can carry cameras, poles, and electronic sensors. This means that snake bots can help find people after a disaster.

Although snake bot technology is still being developed, scientists hope that snake bots will be able to help rescue workers in the future. Because snake bots are small and very flexible, they can quickly squeeze through places and search for people. This could save time and, possibly, save lives.
