WEEKLY NEWS 2: U.S Air Quality Improves

On Thursday, April 27, 2006, The American Lung Association scientists who have been studying air purity in the U.S. published a new report. The report states that the overall quality of air in the U.S. has ameliorated over the past decade.

The report also found that the reduction of some power plant emissions contributed to this success.

"Significant benefits were seen in the eastern United States," said Janice Nolen, the association's Director of National Policy, to a Reuters reporter. "However, cleaner is not clean enough."

While there is a clear improvement, more needs to be done. Pollution from marine sources is still very high and causes a threat, especially to the port cities like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.

"Cities that rank among the worst in the nation for both pollutants include: Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, Hanford and Visalia in California; New York City; Newark, New Jersey; Bridgeport, Connecticut; Washington D.C.; Baltimore; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Cleveland, Ohio, and St. Louis, Missouri," reports Reuters.

The air pollution contributes to lung diseases like asthma, bronchitis and many more. However, the new report is an indication that we are headed in the right direction.
