MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 2: The Smithsonian of Sports
On Thursday, April 29, 2004, Philip Schwalb, Founder and CEO of The National Sports Museum, announced that the nation's first "Smithsonian of Sports" is planned for a location just four blocks from the World Trade Center site. The museum will be interactive and will be located in the landmark former Standard Oil Building at 26 Broadway in New York.
The museum is estimated to cost $60 million. That's a lot of money! Officials plan to open it to the public in 2006, so it will be a little while before you'll be able to visit this new attraction. Thirty of North America's major sports halls of fame and organizations will take part in creating this large and comprehensive museum of sports.
Memorabilia, information and pictures from all types of sports--like baseball, basketball, football and hockey--will be on display in the museum. You'll also be able to see museum displays related to auto racing, boxing, golf, tennis, boxing, swimming and much more!
Admission will cost $14 for adults, but kids and school groups pay less. Three percent of all ticket sales go to a group of charities, including The Jackie Robinson Foundation and the Autism Coalition.
