SPORTS ZONE 1: Yankees Off to Shaky Start
The start to the New York Yankees 2004 season probably does not look like what owner George Steinbrenner had in mind when he bumped the team’s payroll up to $183 million for the 2004 season.
After failing to win the World Series last season, the Yankees went out and signed a slew of high priced free agents as they do every offseason. For some reason, however, the agents aren’t working out the way the executives, team, and especially the fans thought they would.
As of April 29, 2004, the Yankees are in third place in the American League’s
East Division, two places behind their arch rivals, the Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees and Red Sox have played a total of six games against each other so far this season. There is no debating who has had the upper hand, as the
Red Sox have won six of the seven meetings. That includes a series sweep this past weekend at Fenway Park in Boston. It was the first time since 1999 that the Red Sox have swept the Yankees in a three game series
The series was an outright nightmare for the Yankees' sluggers who went a dismal 15-for-99 (.152). The team's batting average now stands at 217, 29th overall out of 30 teams.
