WEEKLY NEWS 1: Asthma Campaign Launched in Miami
On Tuesday, May 6, 2003, a new program was launched to help prevent some of the things that can cause asthma attacks among Miami's Hispanic kids. Ten percent of Miami school children suffer from asthma. Across the country there is a high rate of asthma among kids, especially Hispanics.
The campaign is called "Healthy Children, Healthy Homes" and it will teach parents about the things that can trigger an asthma attack. The campaign is sponsored by many companies and schools, including SC Johnson and its Raid(R) brand, Florida International University School of Nursing, Corpus Christi School, RTI International, Zubi Advertising and Winn Dixie.
The program involves specially trained people called "Asthma Amigos" who will visit Hispanic schools, churches and communities. These "Asthma Amigos" will teach the basic facts about asthma. They'll discuss treatments and give tips for preventing attacks. Their advice will teach parents and families how to control asthma in their homes.
There are many common triggers of asthma, including pollution, pollen, hot and humid weather, pet hair, dried droppings from cockroaches, tobacco smoke, dust, mold and mildew. People with asthma may also have an attack if they have a cold or allergies.
Tips for controlling asthma include using sprays and plastic food containers to control roaches, regularly cleaning to remove dust, and keeping tobacco smoke outdoors.
