SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2: Cell Phone Technology Helps Abducted Kids

Statistics show that when a child is abducted, the first three hours are the most critical to recovery. Beginning May 17, 2005, nearly everyone in America with a cell phone will be able to help during this crucial time.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the wireless communications industry have officially joined forces to enable more than 180 million of America's cell phone users to assist law enforcement search for abducted children.

Currently, AMBER alerts are broadcast by television and radio stations and on some electronic highway signs. After May 17, all wireless subscribers capable of receiving text messages and whose carriers are participating in the initiative may opt to receive AMBER alerts on their phones. For no charge, participants can choose up to five geographic regions where they would like to receive the alerts.

Carriers participating include ALLTEL, Cingular Wireless, Dobson Communications, Nextel, RCC/Unicel, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular and Verizon Wireless. Other carriers are expected to offer the alerts shortly.

To subscribe, cell phone users can register at www.wirelessamberalerts.com or at their wireless carrier's website.
