On May 29, 1848, the state of Wisconsin became the 30th state to join the Union. The people of the territory had voted against joining the Union four times previously, because they feared higher taxes. The people finally voted to join when they realized the benefits of federal programs.



On May 29, 1736, patriot Patrick Henry was born. Henry was a famous public speaker dedicated to freedom and patriotism. He was the first to speak publicly against England’s taxation, and his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech became a battle cry during the Revolutionary War.



On May 30, 1806, Andrew Jackson won a duel against Charles Dickinson. Jackson had challenged the man to the duel after Dickinson had made statements against Jackson’s wife. Although Dickinson was known as one of the best pistol shots in the area, Jackson mortally wounded him from 24 feet away
