On June 2, 1865, the American Civil War ended. Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith signed the surrender terms that were offered by the Union. Smith commanded the last Confederate army, and his surrender formally ended the war. The Civil War lasted for four years and 620,000 soldiers died in battle.
On June 3, 1965, Major Edward H. White II became the first American to walk in space. He was 120 miles above the earth in the space capsule Gemini 4. White opened the hatch, stepped out of the capsule, and remained in space for about twenty minutes.
On June 4, 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment gave women the right to vote. The amendment was then sent to the states for ratification. On August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment. Eight days later the 19th Amendment was made a law.
