WEEKLY NEWS 1: Rehabilitated Bird Released
On Saturday, May 31, 2003, the Green Chimneys will release a rehabilitated bird back into the wild. Green Chimneys Children Services has programs in Connecticut and New York. Their mission is to help guide and mentor children who have emotional problems. One way they do this is with injured birds.
The bird is a red-tailed hawk and was struck by a car. The hawk suffered wing trauma and a concussion, which is related to a head injury. Since it arrived at Green Chimneys facility, it has been cared for by more than 172 students.
Green Chimneys rescues and heals many injured birds. The children help with the birds' care, including feeding. Some of the children even go with the birds when its time for a trip to the veterinarian. The birds are used to help the children in their own emotional therapy. It helps teach the kids that injured creatures can heal and then return home, much like these children must do for themselves. Many times a bird is released into the wild at the same time a child returns to his or her home.
The Saturday, May 31st release of the red-tailed hawk will be during the Green Chimneys 11th annual "With Wings and a Prayer: Birds of Prey Day" in Brewster, NY.
