AROUND THE WORLD 1: Garcia Wins Elections In Peru
Peru's Presidential elections were held Sunday, June 5, between Peruvian candidates Alan Garcia and Ollanta Humala. Both candidates were filtered out of many other contenders as the strongest two political party leaders for the country of Peru.
Although both Garcia and Humala seem to have the same political ideals, it was their varying viewpoints on future political and social control in Peru that set the two party members apart in this election.
Garcia, who was announced President of Peru following election procedures, was against much of the Venezuelan influence and ambitions that are threatening to come against his country. Political contender Humala, who has been linked to the extremist leader of Venezuala, Hugo Chavez, applauded such influences. A vote for Garcia meant preservation of the free market in Peru, which many agreed would increase economic and social growth in the country and the assurance of Peru remaining as an independent country.
Although Garcia triumphed in this election, it was not his first big win. He previously served as President of Peru in 1985-1990, but after his presidency he left the country in economic disorder and under the threat of communist followers. Sunday, following the announcement of his presidency, Garcia apologized for some of the decisions he made during his first presidency and promised his Peruvian citizens a better outcome this time.
