SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 2: Oldest Fossils Found
In Australia, scientists may have found fossils of the oldest life on Earth, according to a study recorded in the journal Nature. The fossils were made from billions of microbes more than 3 billion years ago and are contained inside mounds of dirt. Microbes are living organisms, such as bacteria, viruses or fungi.
One theory is that these dirt mounds aren't just odd shaped piles, but that the microbes climbed inside the dirt and actually built the mounds.
CNN reported that the mounds contained different shapes, resembling "egg cartons, swirls of frosting on cupcakes or waves." The mounds are called stromatolites.
These fossils may give us new insight into how long life has existed on Earth.
