SPORTS ZONE 2: Golfer Throws Pitch
Michelle Wie threw the first pitch last Tuesday night at the Baltimore Orioles game against Toronto. The spotlight has been on Wie for the past few weeks as she tried to set her mark in golfing history. Michelle is a sixteen-year-old Hawaiian native, making her the youngest female to compete for a spot in the Men’s U.S Open. She was competing for one of eighteen spots.
Despite all of the time Michelle put in to the men’s qualifying rounds, she failed to make it to one of those spots. Instead, she will compete with the women in the Women’s Open, along with other tournaments.
Although Michelle Wie will not play with the men, she is still accomplished for a sixteen-year-old girl, and now that school is out for the summer she will show her full potential. She has never had the opportunity to compete in more than a few tournaments at a time, but this summer she is booked solid, following a schedule of a professional golfer. Wie will be competing in the McDonalds LGPA Championship, and then she will be in the Women’s U.S Open on June 29, followed by several other tournaments throughout the summer.
Wie is not discouraged that she will not compete against players like Tiger Woods in this upcoming Men’s Open. She, as well as many other golfers, is certain that the Men’s Open is in her future
