AROUND THE WORLD 3: World Environment Day

The UN general assembly first established World Environment Day in 1972. The 2005 event focused this week on the creation of "green" cities. The opening celebration was in San Francisco, and activities were held around the world. The UN believes the events will increase public awareness on environmental issues.

The theme includes the slogan: "Plan for the Planet." Rallies, symposium, film festivals and other exciting events were scheduled this week.

Secretary General Kofi Annan tried to motivate the public with an informational speech. "On this World Environment Day, I urge individuals, businesses and local and national governments to take up the urban environmental challenge," he said. He also noted in his message that in the next quarter century, almost all population growth will occur in cities, particularly in under-developed countries. In addition, Annan pointed out that by 2030, more than 60% of the world's population will live in urban areas. In light of such rapid urban growth, it is expected that challenges such as poverty, crime and unemployment will result. It is estimated that one of every three urban dwellers live in a slum.

In San Francisco, Mayor Gavin Newsom expressed his gratitude for having his city chosen as host for World Environment Day. "San Francisco is honored to host the UN World Environment Day in 2005. We are delighted to work with the UN Environment Programme," he said.
