AROUND THE WORLD 1: New Sprint World Record
A new world record for the 100-meter sprint has been set by a 95-year-old Japanese man.
Kozo Haraguchi clocked 22.04 seconds in a one man race for men aged 95-99 in Miyazaki, Japan. The previous record was held by a Hawaii resident name Erwin Jaskulski. Before the new record is declared official, it will have to be verified by the World Masters Athletic organization.
Haraguchi ran the length in the rain, a first for him. Harguchi may not have been used to the weather conditions, but he is familiar with breaking world records. Five years ago, in 2000, Haraguchi set the 100-meter record for men aged 90-94 with 18.08 seconds.
Haraguchi did not start competing in track and field until he was 65-years-old. He said he started running as a method of staying in shape. He also takes daily walks for exercise.
