U.S. GOVERNMENT 3: Biden Set to Run for President
The race for the presidency in 2008 has its first candidate: Senator Joseph Biden, D-DE. Senator Biden announced Sunday, June 19, 2005, that he plans to run for president in the next race. The last time he ran, more than two decades ago, he dropped out amid suspicion that he had plagiarized a speech from Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock. Allegations were also leveled that he had embellished his academic record for years.
Biden’s first step to clinch the presidency will be to secure the Democratic Party nomination. However, with high profile names such as Hilary Clinton being thrown around for 2008, it might be too early to say whether or not Senator Biden has a shot at the White House. This hasn’t deterred him, as he’s optimistic that it’s still anybody’s game.
Senator Biden currently serves as the senior Democratic Party member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He is a Bush detractor, strongly opposing American involvement in Iraq and the current policy circulating in the Middle East. During the 2004 race, Biden suggested he would run in 2008 but, until now, no details had been set in stone.
Some other names that have popped up for the Democratic ticket in 2008 include John Kerry and John Edwards, who would be taking a second chance at the race for the White House. Vice President Dick Cheney has ruled out the possibility that he will run under the Republican ticket, but rumors have circulated that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice might take up the challenge should Hilary Clinton seriously consider running for the office.
