WEEKLY NEWS 3: Vegetable Allergies

Do you enjoy the fresh fruits and vegetables of summer? Many people love to sink their teeth into a juicy peach, a crisp apple, or a fresh tomato. But for people with hay fever, fruits and vegetables could cause an allergic reaction.

This summer, the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) issued a statement reminding people with hay fever that fruits and vegetables may cause an allergic reaction.

The allergic reaction is caused by pollens that cross over into the proteins of the food. The reaction is known as Oral Allergy Syndrome, and it is usually limited to the mouth, tongue, lips and throat.

However, not everyone with hay fever will have a reaction to fruits and vegetables! People allergic to certain tree grass or weeds are most likely to experience Oral Allergy Syndrome, but not everyone allergic to pollen will experience a reaction to fruits and vegetables.

If you do get an itchy mouth when you eat certain foods, you may still be able to enjoy them if you eat them cooked instead of raw. Cooking, heating or canning fruits and vegetables usually destroys any allergens.

Remember, it's important to see your doctor if you have any type of unusual reaction to any food. A doctor will be able to find out what type of allergies you're experiencing.
