PICTURE OF THE WEEK: London's Eco-Friendly Olympics
Following the International Olympic Committee's announcement that London will host the 2012 Olympic Games, WWF is urging the city to make good on its commitment to make it the 'greenest' and most sustainable games the world has ever seen.
The ‘One Planet Olympics’ initiative--devised by WWF-UK, the BioRegional Development Group, and the London 2012 bid team--has set out principles and a detailed action plan by which the city would deliver a truly sustainable Games and provide the template for the Olympics of the future.
“We have now been given the unique opportunity to showcase how we are the international leaders in environmental awareness and sustainability by hosting the first ever One Planet Olympics," said Paul King, Director of WWF-UK's One Planet Living.
“The unprecedented agreement to make the games zero waste and low carbon will bring about long-term environmental and social benefits to London long after the games have ended. What happens now will shape the future direction of the Olympic Games.”
London’s 'green' plan will eliminate waste from the games ending up in landfill, and includes a full range of sustainable transport solutions and other energy-saving measures with the end result being a ‘low-carbon’ games.
Uniquely, the proposals utilize the latest environmental accounting methods to measure the total ‘ecological footprint’ of the games and minimize their impact.
This approach, in which sustainability underpinned the whole bid, is set to ensure the least environmental impact and give long-term environmental and social benefits to London for future generations.
