SPORTS ZONE 1: Roger Federer: Wimbledon Champion

Roger Federer won the Wimbledon tennis championship this year, beating out American Andy Roddick in the final match. The match lasted one hour and forty-one minutes. This is Federer's third win in a row at the tournament.

Federer won in four sets, proving to be one of the best players on the pro tour. He dominated throughout the entire match. In fact, during the championship match, he only made 12 unforced errors--a difficult accomplishment. He didn’t even let the brief rain delay affect his game play. After the match, Roddick praised Federer, who he is 1-9 against. Even though Roddick is known for his fast serve, not even that could help him during the match.

Federer is only 23-years-old. He was born on August 8, 1981, in Switzerland. That is also where he lives when he is not on tour. He won his first professional tournament in 2001. In 2004, he was able to win three out of the four major tennis tournaments. That year he won Wimbledon, the Australian open, and the US Open. His talent has been praised by tennis greats like John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.

In his free time, Federer likes to relax on the beach, play cards, and even play Playstation games. He also loves soccer, which he played when he was growing up. He has his own foundation which he uses to help children in need. He also helped in the relief for Tsunami victims.
