AROUND THE WORLD 2: Panda Visits City

A wild panda ventured into a city in the Sichuan province of China last Saturday, where it caused havoc among local residents. At first, residents believed there was a burglar in the area after three men reported seeing “a figure” climbing the fence of the residential neighborhood. They quickly realized it was a panda and not a burglar.

The panda took a tour of the neighborhood, jumped from roof to roof, went swimming in a local river and later took a nap in a nearby tree. The next morning the panda was tranquillized and brought out of the tree by firefighters.

The female panda, weighing approximately 60kgs, was then taken to the area's panda research center where experts said she was very scared and traumatized by her city adventure. She was put under 24-hour intensive care.

It is not known why the panda entered the city, but it is thought she may have been driven from her home by something or someone.

The panda, an endangered animal, normally lives in the mountains at high altitudes ranging between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. It typically lives about 20 or so years.
