U.S. GOVERNMENT 1: Roberts Nominated For Supreme Court
President Bush has selected John Roberts as the nominee to replace Sandra Day O'Connor as a Supreme Court Justice.
Roberts has impressed both parties with his academic and professional accomplishments. He was first in his class at Harvard Law School and has been a lawyer during two presidential administrations--under Ronald Reagan and George Bush.
Many Democrats feared the president would select a more extreme candidate for the court and were surprised by his nomination of Roberts. Senate analysts are now predicting that Roberts will not face a Senate filibuster--where Democrats would try to stop him from being confirmed as a new justice. Still, Roberts faces intense questioning from both parties during his upcoming confirmation hearings.
