SPORTS ZONE 1: Tiger Woods Wins British Open
Tiger Woods Wins British Open by Jeff Benson
Tiger Woods won the British Open this month. This was his tenth major tournament win. It is also the second major tournament he has won this year.
Woods won in a decisive victory, winning by five shots with a score of 274. He led the tournament from the beginning and was clearly focused on winning it.
The second place finisher was Colin Montgomerie with a score of 279. He was favored by the crowd since he is from Scotland. Montgomerie called Woods “The best player of our generation” when talking about him after the tournament.
Woods recently made some changes to his golf swing, and many people were critical of those changes. However, Woods thought the changes were necessary if he was to start winning majors again. It looks like he was right, since he won this most recent tournament. It was an important victory for him since he lost the U.S. Open by only two strokes.
This year's British Open was not only a big moment for Tiger Woods, but was also a big moment for Jack Nicklaus. Jack Nicklaus is one of golf’s all time greats. It was his last time playing the course, and he left after missing the cut.
Nicklaus and Woods now have something in common: they are the only two Americans to ever have won the British Open twice. Nicklaus holds the record of winning 18 major tournaments. Woods has won ten, making him the most likely candidate to have a chance at breaking the record.
