U.S. GOVERNMENT: Senator Warner Engaged?
You heard it here first--in a story broken right here at Kidsnewsroom.org, United States Senator John W. Warner, Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and Virginia's first ever five-term U.S. Senator, is engaged to be married for third time at the tender young age of 76. Sources close to Kidsnewsroom.org have confirmed that Senator Warner did indeed recently propose to his girlfriend of more than a year, and that she "happily accepted".
Born and raised in Virginia, Warner dutifully enlisted in the United Stated Navy at the age of just 17 during World War II. After the war, he completed undergraduate studies at Washington and Lee University before beginning law school at the University of Virginia. Shortly after his legal education began, the Korean War began, and once again Warner answered the call of duty to his country, receiving an officer's commission into the United Stated Marine Corps. After the Korean War, he finished his law degree and began a dozen years of representing his nation in the court as a United States Attorney. Warner then was appointed Secretary of the Navy, and then, in 1976 as the nation prepared to celebrate its first 200 years, then President Gerald Ford made him Chairman of the Bi-Centennial Commission. Then, in 1978, Warner was elected to the United States Senate representing his native Virginia. A quarter of a century later, Senator Warner continues to represent the Commonwealth of Virginia with honor, integrity, and a vigor unmatched by many half his age.
Senator Warner is a truly remarkable and distinguished person, and someone whom I have had the pleasure to work for and know personally. Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to be hired as Warner's legislative aide for military and foreign affairs. In my 16 months serving on his staff, I was able to witness firsthand not only his vast wisdom and experience on an assortment of issues, but also the political savvy and skill and general affability that have helped him in over a quarter of century in the US Senate, and a lifetime of public service. Once married to actress Liz Taylor, and earlier to a member of the prominent Mellon family, Senator Warner is no stranger to matrimony. Nonetheless, some of those who know him, myself included, are pleasantly surprised at hearing of his third engagement.
With nearly 60 years of service to his country in an array of capacities, Senator Warner truly embodies the notion of a "great American"- a phrase which "the Boss" (as he is affectionately known to his staff) was quick to bestow upon his loyal staffers. For those of you with an interest in public office and service to your nation, I can think of no better man to emulate than Virginia's senior and most distinguished Senator, the Honorable John William Warner.
