WEEKLY NEWS 2: $635,000 Raised for Animals
On Tuesday, August 26, 2003, PETCO Animals Supplies, Inc. announced that it has raised more than $635,000 for the PETCO Foundation's Round-UP/Spay Today 2003 campaign. The money was donated by customers, vendors and associates.
From July 27 to August 17, which was the time period for Round-UP/Spay Today 2003, customers were encouraged to round-up their purchases to the nearest dollar. So if their total was $10.75, they could pay $11.00 instead. That extra $0.25 was than donated to the cause.
The money raised will go toward many different pet-friendly things, mostly local spay and neuter programs. Each of PETCO's 635 stores chose a charity to which they wanted to donate some money. Some of the money will also go to SpayUSA, a national program for animals.
These types of programs help deal with the animal overpopulation problem. By spaying and neutering animals, people are able to prevent unwanted litters. This is an important issue in the Unites States, since 6-8 million animals are given away to shelters every year. Unfortunately, as many as half of those animals never receive a loving home.
Last year this program raised more than $450,000 for local programs. But there were even more donations this year! It's estimated that as many as 12,700 animals could get spayed or neutered because of the campaign.
