SPORTS ZONE 1: A Tennis Legend

Andre Agassi is a name that most people recognize. But why? It may be because he has appeared in 21 consecutive US Opens. It may also be because he has won two US Open titles, or because he is about to retire. For whatever reason it is, Agassi proves over again exactly why he is a tennis icon. However, this US Open will be his last, and each match he plays can possibly be his last professional match. Andre Agassi has announced that this tournament will be his last as a professional tennis player.

On Monday, Agassi won his first match against Andrei Pavel of Romania. A match win goes to the player that wins best out of five different sets. The scores of those sets were 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 giving the win to Agassi since he won three of the sets.

Andre Agassi will play Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus next. The players both have similar playing styles so the competition is even, but Baghdatis is only 21 and Agassi is 36, which will counterbalance both the maturity on the court as well as the physical aspects of the game. Agassi was reported to have taken a shot of medication to help with the pain in his back after playing Pavel, but he will still play his match against Baghdatis.

If Agassi looses this match, his career will be over. If he wins, he will continue to play until he wins a title or gets eliminated form the US Open. However, he will still be remembered as one of the best tennis players in the US.
