WEEKLY NEWS 2: New Orleans Mourns One Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

August 29 marked the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the hurricane that nearly destroyed most of the Gulf Coast. In honor of the anniversary, many of the surviving New Orleans residents organized a traditional New Orleans funeral pall to remember of the hundreds of Hurricane Katrina victims who died during the storm. President Bush participated in the anniversary proceedings.

The traditional New Orleans funeral pall included a jazz funeral procession in which President Bush, local dignitaries, emergency works, and New Orleans residents walked from the convention center to the Louisiana Superdome. The jazz procession was filled with dancing and singing and is a traditional New Orleans way to remember the dead.

After the procession, over 130 peopled gathered to hear the names of all those who passed away during the Hurricane in New Orleans. After each name was read, a rose was placed in the canal water to show respect to those who lost their lives.

Although the procession was a time of mourning and reflection, President Bush was able to speak to the residents of New Orleans. He apologized for his lack of response to help those who were displaced or in danger during the storm. This was the Presidents 13th trip to the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina.
