WEEKLY NEWS 3: Green Energy

Move over pine trees, lobsters, and blueberries; Maine is not just Vacationland anymore. Last week Maine became the first state in the US to install an educational hydrogen generator. This hydrogen generator proves that green energy is possible and functional.

Hydrogen is considered green energy because it does not pollute the environment. The easiest place to find hydrogen is in the water. Tap water, bottled water, and sea water are all made of hydrogen and oxygen. Scientists use electrolysis to remove hydrogen from the water. Electrolysis involves passing an electric current through the water; consequently, the water separates and scientists can use the hydrogen for energy.

The hydrogen generator in Maine is a backup energy source in case the power goes out at the Chewonski environmental education center. According to the Associate Press, the center uses energy from solar panels for electrolysis and creates high pressure hydrogen. The energy from this hydrogen can power center for four days.
